At SugarLock, operated by Rudeus LLC ("we," "our," or "us"), we take your privacy seriously. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, and protect your information when you use our mobile application SugarLock (the "App").
Most importantly: All user data is stored locally on your device. SugarLock does not have servers that store your personal data. Your information never leaves your device unless you explicitly choose to share it.
1. About SugarLock
SugarLock is a gamified digital wellness app that helps users manage screen time by connecting app usage to physical activity. Users voluntarily lock their own apps and unlock them by walking and completing quests. SugarLock is designed as a self-control tool for adults managing their own screen time, not for parental control or monitoring others.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 HealthKit Data (Step Count Only)
With your explicit permission, SugarLock accesses your step count from Apple HealthKit:
- What we access: Step count data ONLY (no other health data)
- Why: To track quest progress and unlock apps when you reach step goals
- Storage: Local device only, never sent to servers
- User Control: You can revoke HealthKit permissions at any time through your device's Settings app
- Important: We only read data from HealthKit. We do not write data to HealthKit.
2.2 Food Photos (Optional - Food Quest Mode Only)
If you choose to use Food Quest mode, you may take photos of your meals:
- What: Food photos taken by you
- Why: To create food quests and visually track meals
- Storage: Local device only, saved to your device's photo library
- Processing: Food recognition runs on-device using CoreML (Food101 model) for categorization only
- No server upload: Photos never leave your device
- User Control: Camera access is optional. You can delete photos at any time through your device's photo library
2.3 App Selection Data
To provide app blocking functionality, SugarLock needs to know which apps you choose to lock:
- What: Which apps you select to lock
- Why: To enforce blocking via iOS Screen Time API
- Storage: Local device only via iOS Screen Time framework
- User Control: You have full control over which apps to lock or unlock
- Important: We do not access the content of blocked apps or your usage within them
2.4 Quest and Settings Data
To maintain app functionality between sessions, SugarLock stores:
- What: Quest history, step goals, app names, emergency override phrase, preferences
- Why: To maintain app functionality and remember your settings
- Storage: Local device only (UserDefaults, CoreData)
- No server: All data remains on your device
2.5 Subscription Status
SugarLock offers premium features through subscriptions:
- What: Premium/trial status managed by Apple StoreKit
- Why: To unlock premium features
- Handled by: Apple's App Store (we don't store payment information)
- User Control: Manage subscriptions through iOS Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions
2.6 Usage Analytics (If Implemented)
We may collect anonymous usage data to improve the app:
- What: Crash reports for debugging, anonymous usage statistics
- What we don't collect: NO personal data, NO identifiable information
- Purpose: To fix bugs and improve app stability
3. What We Do NOT Collect
To be clear, SugarLock does NOT collect:
- ❌ Glucose/blood sugar data (app doesn't use this)
- ❌ Food nutrition analysis (only visual recognition for categorization)
- ❌ Location data
- ❌ Contacts, messages, or app content
- ❌ Personal health information beyond step count
- ❌ Payment information (handled by Apple)
- ❌ User accounts or email addresses (no account system)
4. How We Use Your Information
Since all data is stored locally on your device, we use your information solely to:
- Provide Core Functionality: Enable app blocking, step tracking, and quest completion features
- Process Food Photos (Optional): Run on-device food recognition for Food Quest categorization
- Track Progress: Display your quest history and progress within the app
- Improve the App: Use anonymous crash reports and usage statistics to fix bugs
5. Data Storage and Security
5.1 Local-Only Storage
All user data is stored locally on your device. SugarLock does not have servers that store your personal data. This means:
- Your step count data stays on your device
- Your food photos (if any) stay in your device's photo library
- Your quest history and settings stay on your device
- Your app selection preferences stay on your device
5.2 Data Security
Since data is stored locally, security is managed by:
- iOS device encryption and security features
- Apple's HealthKit privacy framework
- iOS Screen Time API security
- Your device's passcode/biometric authentication
6. HealthKit Integration
SugarLock integrates with Apple HealthKit solely to track your step count for quest progress:
- What we access: Step count data ONLY
- Why: To verify quest completion and unlock apps when step goals are met
- Storage: We only read step data. Your health data is never shared with third parties and remains private on your device
- User Control: You can revoke HealthKit permissions at any time through iOS Settings > Privacy & Security > Health > SugarLock
7. Screen Time API
SugarLock uses Apple's Screen Time API to enable users to set self-imposed app restrictions:
- Purpose: This is a personal wellness tool, NOT for parental control or monitoring others
- User Control: Users voluntarily lock their own apps
- What we access: Only the apps you select to lock
- What we don't access: We do not access the content of blocked apps or your usage within them
- User Control: You can disable restrictions through iOS Settings if needed
8. Camera and Photo Access
Camera access is optional and only used for Food Quest mode:
- When used: Only if you choose to use Food Quest mode
- What happens: Photos are stored in your device's photo library
- Processing: Food recognition runs on-device using CoreML for categorization only
- No upload: Photos are never uploaded to servers
- User Control: You can revoke camera access at any time through iOS Settings
9. Data Sharing and Disclosure
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal information to third parties.
Since all data is stored locally on your device, we don't have access to share it. The only circumstances where information might be shared are:
- Legal Requirements: If required by law, court order, or government regulation (though we have no data to provide since it's all stored locally)
- Anonymous Analytics: If we use analytics services, only anonymous, non-identifiable data would be shared
10. Your Rights and Choices
You have complete control over your data:
- Access: All your data is on your device - you can view it anytime in the app
- Deletion: Delete all SugarLock data by deleting the app from your device
- Revoke Permissions: Revoke HealthKit, Camera, or Screen Time permissions anytime through iOS Settings
- Control App Selection: Choose which apps to lock or unlock at any time
- Delete Photos: Delete food photos anytime through your device's photo library
Since all data is stored locally on your device, you can delete all SugarLock data by deleting the app.
11. Children's Privacy
SugarLock is intended for users 13 years and older. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13. Since the app doesn't require accounts and all data is stored locally, we don't have a way to identify users' ages, but we recommend that users under 18 have parental permission to use the app.
12. International Data Transfers
Since all data is stored locally on your device and never transmitted to servers, there are no international data transfers. Your data stays on your device, wherever you are in the world.
13. Data Retention
Since all data is stored locally on your device:
- Data persists as long as the app is installed on your device
- You can delete all data by deleting the app
- We don't retain any data after you delete the app
14. Changes to This Privacy Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any material changes by:
- Posting the new Privacy Policy on our website
- Updating the "Last Updated" date
- Including a notice in the app (if significant changes occur)
Your continued use of the App after changes become effective constitutes acceptance of the updated Privacy Policy.
15. Medical Disclaimer
Important: SugarLock is NOT a medical device and is NOT intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. The App provides general wellness tools for digital wellness and physical activity. Walking recommendations are for general wellness only. Always consult with a healthcare professional for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
